A few examples of our target

I looked into a few examples of animated characters that do not need speech to show expressions. They are all animals but have characteristics and actions that make the viewer believe they could be human.

This has made me decide that the character I create will definitely be an animal that has human characteristics.

Gromit - Wallace and Gromit

Luxo - Disney Pixar

Scrat - Ice Age

A lot of character animations use a voice over whilst they use the animations to be realistic. This sometimes takes the focus off the actions that they are doing. This could be things like the Teletubbies.

Some animations try to keep the focus on the characters and what they are doing by using a different language for them to speak in. The two examples below both have the characters making noises but you are unable to work out what they are saying and the animations are still very effective.

Morph - The Adventures of Morph

Pocoyo has become one of the most popular childrens programme's around at the moment. This could be partly down to Stephen Fry doing the voice over or maybe the randomness of the child's freinds. Pocoyo has a voice over and the main child says a few words but most of the other characters use animations to get across their feelings.
